Opportunities for training and working for lay and ordained pioneer ministers are increasing in the Church of England. Find out more from on the edge, a dvd, and from the downloadable documents at the foot of the page:

1) on the edge - exploring ordained pioneer ministry in the Church of England
An exciting and inspiring dvd. Find out more, or buy from the online shop.

2) Exploring pioneer minstry
Fresh Expressions and our partner agencies have received a significant number of enquiries from existing clergy who would like to explore pioneer ministry as part of their own calling to ordained ministry. We are always glad to talk through particular situations with individuals. However we have provided this short guide as a way of summarising the advice we have been giving to clergy who are making this journey. We hope this guide will also prove useful to those who work with clergy in exploring their unfolding vocations in oversight and ministerial review.

3) Ordained Pioneer Ministry Guidelines
The Church of England has adopted the language of pioneer ministry for starting and sustaining fresh expressions of church.  In 2006 the House of Bishops approved new guidelines to encourage vocations to pioneer ministry as a recognised focus of ordained ministry. There are a growing number of candidates in training and beginning to serve their title posts as pioneers.

4) Lay Pioneer Ministry Guidelines
In 2007 the House of Bishops approved a similar set of guidelines to encourage lay pioneer ministry in various forms.  It is now possible to explore and be equipped for this lay ministry nationally as a Church Army Evangelist and locally in an increasing number of dioceses .

5) Dioceses, Pastoral and Mission Measure
The House of Bishops’ Code of Practice on bishops’ mission orders was approved by General Synod in February 2008. It includes the full text of Part V of the 2007 Measure, which  deals with new bishops’ mission orders which bishops can use to endorse and provide recognition and oversight for new forms of Church developing alongside traditional ones.

You can find out more about this from the booklet Bishops' Mission Orders: A beginner's guide, which explains, in accessible language, how they work. You can buy it from our online shop.

On our other site, Share, there is a new page called Bishops' Mission Orders, which gives more information, and will host further materials and resources.

A skeleton Bishop's Mission Order and Supplementary Instrument have been prepared in order to assist those making the Order and can be downloaded from the Church of England website. This is intended as a guide in framing the documentation; different arrangements can be made locally if the bishop agrees. These documents will be reviewed in the light of experience.
