Fresh Expressions on the fringe?

Around 40 synod members gave up their lunchbreak to hear Fresh Expressions team leader Graham Cray when General Synod met in York.

At the special fringe meeting Bishop Cray outlined his vision for the next phase of the initiative and emphasised the difference he saw between fresh expressions of church and fresh expressions of worship. Intending to plant new missional congregations and communities lay at the heart of the task, he said.

His comments were earthed by two local examples - of a fresh expression of church for men in nearby Bridlington and a fresh expression which meets in the crypt of York Minster.

The Archbishop of Canterbury paid a visit to the Fresh Expressions stand at synod and was introduced to local ordained pioneer minister Ben Norton.

A full debate on Mission-shaped Church and fresh expressions has been postponed to the General Synod in London next February.
