The Diocese of London and the London District of the Methodist Church are backing the latest Fresh Expressions mission shaped ministry course in Muswell Hill. The course, which helps Christians to reach those not involved in traditional churches, will run from Saturday 17th April.
Hosts for the Muswell Hill msm are Jonathan Kerry, Methodist Minister and Director of the Guy Chester Centre and Simon Kirby, Anglican Minister of Emmanuel Network Church, a fresh expression of church planted in 2006.
Course teachers will include both those with experience of fresh expressions nationally and local teachers including Annie Kirke; Revd Jenny Ellis, Spirituality and Discipleship Officer, Methodist Church; Jonny Baker of the Church Mission Society leadership and discipleship team; John Coles, leader of New Wine; and Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church.
John Coles said:
If 97% of the nation is not in church every week it's either because they are not interested in spiritual things, or because 'church' is not sufficiently interesting or interested in them. If the nation is to be changed, the Church has to change its way of communicating the good news about Jesus. The course has already helped many to reconnect with God’s heart for the nation, and to find new ways of helping the Church to find new ways of reaching the 97%. I thoroughly recommend it... but be warned... it might change your life as well as your view of church.
Revd Dr Stuart Jordan, one of three District chairs for London, added:
Church life in London is too fluid and diverse for labels like 'fresh' or 'traditional' – but it all needs to be mission-shaped! I welcome the opportunities offered by this course to explore what that might mean in different contexts.
This course is designed for lay and ordained leaders and pioneers, who may already be involved in a fresh expressions project, or who are committed to exploring the idea. Individuals are welcome, though teams are encouraged to attend together as they can more effectively apply what is learned to their own context.
Participants will have online access to course materials and a broad range of resources developed by the national Fresh Expressions team. The course consists of seven Thursday evenings, three Saturdays, and a weekend away from 12th-14th November. It will finish on 12th March 2011.
Saturdays run from 9.30am to 5pm at the Guy Chester Centre in Muswell Hill.
Thursday nights run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, also at the Guy Chester Centre.
The residential weekend is at King's Park, Northampton, NN3 6LL.
The cost of the course is £275 which covers all materials, refreshments and the residential weekend away.
