The highly successful Fresh Expressions mission shaped ministry course, which helps Christians to help reach those not involved in traditional churches, is to take place in Bradford, Leeds and Skipton from January 2010.
The one year, part-time course mission shaped ministry looks at how to start and sustain, fresh expressions of church. It is available in over 30 areas and, by the end of 2010, an estimated 2,000 people will have taken part in the sessions.
Leeds: The course will take place at St. Philip's Church, Main Street, Scholes, Leeds, from 23rd January. It is being delivered jointly by the Leeds Methodist District and the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds.
Individuals are very welcome to sign up for the course but organisers have found that learning is enhanced when people come as part of small groups; msm is designed for laity, clergy and all trained church leaders.
msm Leeds runs over four Saturdays (9.30am to 4.30pm), five Tuesday evenings (7.30pm to 9.30pm), and a residential weekend at Sneaton Castle, Whitby (23rd-25th April). It will finish on 20th November 2010. Other courses are being held at Undercliffe Bradford on Mondays and Skipton on Tuesdays, both starting on 23rd January.
The cost of the course is £250 which covers all materials, refreshments and the residential weekend away. Grants may be available towards this.
David Hunt, Methodist Probationary Deacon, Harrogate, commented:
I recommend this course for all probationers - it teaches you the important practical things about ministry and mission for today.
Ann Nicholl, Reader in Leeds City Team Ministry, added:
The course enables participants to share in an exploration of fresh expressions and to widen their understanding of the whole concept.
Heather Cooper, Methodist Superintendent Minister, Morley, said:
It would be of real benefit to any minister at the start of their ministry as well as lay people wanting to be more actively involved.

msm Bradford runs over three Saturdays (10am to 4pm), seven Monday evenings (7.30pm to 9.30pm), and a residential weekend at Sneaton Castle Centre, Whitby (18th-20th June). It will finish on 4th December 2010. The Saturday sessions take place at Bingley Methodist Church, Mornington Road, Bingley; Monday meetings will be hosted by St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Otley Road, Undercliffe, Bradford.
The cost of the course is £250 which covers all materials, refreshments and the residential weekend away.
Skipton: Details are as for Bradford with Tuesday meetings being hosted by Skipton Baptist Church, Otley Street, Skipton.
The cost of the course is £250 which covers all materials, refreshments and the residential weekend away.
Peter Whittaker, Chair of West Yorkshire Methodist District, said:
The course aims to equip participants to start fresh expressions in their own context, but also has the potential to refresh work done in more traditional settings.
Rt Revd David James, Bishop of Bradford, said:
I am delighted that the msm course is taking place for the region, especially as it involves Anglicans, Methodists and the Baptist Church working together. There's such a need for us to think creatively about mission to all sorts of 'people groups', people who don't naturally connect with 'church' but are still hungry to hear the Good News about Jesus. I hope the course is both fun and fruitful and that good things grow from it in terms of mission and evangelism in our region.
