(Media) Start of mission shaped ministry course in Walthamstow

Date
Wednesday, 9 December, 2009

The highly successful Fresh Expressions mission shaped ministry course, which helps Christians to help reach those not involved in traditional churches, is to take place in Walthamstow from January 2010.

The one year, part-time mission shaped ministry course looks at how to start, and sustain, fresh expressions of church. It is available in over 30 centres across the country and, by the end of 2010, an estimated 2,000 people will have taken part in the sessions.

It has been established jointly between the Diocese of Chelmsford and the Church Mission Society with a growing and broader ownership across the major Church movements and denominations.

Rt Revd David Hawkins, Bishop of Barking and Lead Bishop for Mission, Diocese of Chelmsford, said:

The mission shaped ministry course provides practical and serious training for action to move things forward for those involved in fresh or inherited expressions of mission and church. Don’t miss the opportunity!

Major Mike Caffull, International Emergency Services Field Operations Officer, The Salvation Army, added:

The curriculum is... a valuable investment for anyone with a passion to share the Gospel in new and relevant ways.

Revd Anne Brown, Chair of Beds, Essex and Herts Methodist District, said:

In today’s culture we need new tools to share the Good News in different ways. This course will be a great asset to those who wish to update their skills focusing on mission and outreach within the communities they serve.

Revd Graham Horsley, Coordinator: Evangelism, Spirituality and Discipleship, The Methodist Church, said:

I've been involved in teaching the course from which it's been developed for several years and feel it is a very useful tool.

The course will start on 30th January 2010 and run at St Mary's Welcome Centre, 8 Church End, Walthamstow. The 24-unit course is presented over three Saturdays (9am to 5pm), a residential weekend at Chigwell Convent (2-4 July) and seven Tuesday evenings (7.30pm to 9.30pm). It will finish on 4th December 2010.

For those developing fresh expressions of church, mentoring is offered in between meetings. Individuals are very welcome to sign up for the course but organisers have found that learning is enhanced when people come as part of small groups.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is fully behind the Fresh Expressions initiative and said recently:

Fresh Expressions is about the re-discovery of the deepest roots about who we are as Christians.

The cost of the course is £225 per person which includes relevant materials, the residential weekend, and all refreshments.
