New Monasticism Day

Thursday, 29 March, 2012

A day to explore Mission Communities/Orders and New Monasticism, organised by Dr Rachel Jordan, primarily for Church of England Diocesan Missioners but open to others in related positions.

A day to explore the new wave of Mission Communities/Orders and the movement of New Monaticism, meeting together on the 29th March 2012 in Sheffield Cathedral from 11am-3pm.

  • Bishop Steven Croft gave us an overview of what is actually happening now with regard to these new missional movements and what the vision could be for the future.

Steven Croft: forging the gears

  • Ian Mobsby of Moot and Chris Neal of CMS talked about how the new movements are learning from the old orders.

Chris Neal: sodal and modal
Ian Mobsby: new monasticism

  • Shannon Hopkins shared from a grass roots perspective on how she has grown a community for mission and Philip Roderick shared the experiences of Contemplative Fire.

Philip Roderick: travelling light, dwelling deep

  • Annie Nash, Chris Neal, Beth Keith and Diane Kershaw discussed some of the current thinking developing in the national mission orders growing out of the Anglican context: Lee Abbey, CMS, Church Army and TOM.

Annie Nash: renewing the vision
Beth Keith: experiences of pioneers
Diane Kershaw: the order of mission

Together we explored how we can encourage people to join in the new orders or how a Diocese might create a new Order for mission that would encourage lay pioneers. What is our response and how can we best help, harness and release the new wave of creative missional thinking where we are.
